A small percentage of a very large number is still *a large number*. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4bnc5\" data-offset-key=\"9k87u-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9k87u-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9k87u-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4bnc5\" data-offset-key=\"ahq9q-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ahq9q-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ahq9q-0-0\">The Department of Education estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/fastfacts\/display.asp?id=372\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">50,800,000 public school students started the 2019-2020 school year<\/a><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"ahq9q-2-0\">. School admission rates have been trending up, but 2019 is the latest available data. Data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/69\/wr\/mm6914e4.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC puts ICU admittance for children infected with SARS-CoV-2 at 0.58% (between 0.58% and 2%<\/a>,<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"ahq9q-4-0\"> but I&#8217;ll use the lower number since I haven&#8217;t encountered an &#8216;only two percent&#8217; argument). <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4bnc5\" data-offset-key=\"amkoc-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"amkoc-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"amkoc-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4bnc5\" data-offset-key=\"anp18-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"anp18-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"anp18-0-0\">If only 1% of the kids who enter public school get infected, that&#8217;s over 2,500 kids in the ICU. If 5% get infected, that&#8217;s over 14,000 in the ICU.
