But when you do the same thing with files shared through <em>Chat<\/em> &#8230; there&#8217;s no delete option. If you click the ellipsis on the file&#8217;s card in the chat dialogue, still no delete option. That&#8217;s <em>not<\/em> because files cannot be deleted &#8212; how to delete chat files is just non-intuitive.<\/p>\n<p>Hover your mouse over the <em>message<\/em> that was posted when your shared the file. You&#8217;ll see the <a href=\"\/community\/information-technology\/it-essentials-for-employees\/blog\/2019\/06\/13\/did-you-know-there-are-now-reactions-in-teams\">reaction toolbar<\/a> and <em>another<\/em> ellipsis. Click on <em>that<\/em> ellipsis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rushworth.us\/lisa\/?attachment_id=5420\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5420\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rushworth.us\/lisa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screenshot-from-2019-06-28-08-19-20.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rushworth.us\/lisa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screenshot-from-2019-06-28-08-19-20.png 515w, https:\/\/www.rushworth.us\/lisa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screenshot-from-2019-06-28-08-19-20-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the option to delete the <em>message<\/em>. Deleting the message about the file deletes the file from the &#8220;Files&#8221; tab in the chat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rushworth.us\/lisa\/?attachment_id=5421\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5421\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rushworth.us\/lisa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screenshot-from-2019-06-28-10-18-00.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rushworth.us\/lisa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screenshot-from-2019-06-28-10-18-00.png 495w, https:\/\/www.rushworth.us\/lisa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screenshot-from-2019-06-28-10-18-00-300x215.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you use the &#8220;Files&#8221; tab to share a file, a new conversation item is created. But, when you use the little paperclip at the bottom of the message composition dialogue to share a file &#8230; your file and message text can be combined into one item (upper rectangle with text and a file combined in one chat post). Not a problem until you want to remove the file from your chat and have to delete the conversation text too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While it makes a lot of sense to provide context to a file &#8212; why are you sharing this, what am I meant to be doing with it &#8212; I recommend posting the context message and <em>then<\/em> posting a blank message into which the file is attached (lower rectangle with two independent chat posts). You can select an existing OneDrive file, and files you upload through Teams are stored in the &#8220;Microsoft Teams Chat Files&#8221; folder of your OneDrive. Because it&#8217;s possible that you&#8217;ve shared the same file with multiple individuals, or that <em>you<\/em> still want the file even though it&#8217;s no longer shared with a specific person, deleting a file from the Teams chat does <em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em> delete it from OneDrive.
