{"id":4860,"date":"2019-03-06T15:33:32","date_gmt":"2019-03-06T20:33:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lisa.rushworth.us\/?p=4860"},"modified":"2019-03-07T17:05:25","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T22:05:25","slug":"4860","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rushworth.us\/lisa\/?p=4860","title":{"rendered":"Do you know \u2026 how Teams and Skype interact?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span>How Teams and Skype interact can be confusing \u2013 where will messages be delivered and what should you expect to work between the two systems?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Channel<\/em><\/strong> conversations don\u2019t exist in Skype, so you\u2019ll need to use the Teams desktop, mobile, or web client to participate in channel discussions and to access files and tabs within channels.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Meetings<\/em><\/strong> are straight-forward too. You\u2019ll need to use the Skype desktop, mobile, or web client to join Skype for Business meetings; you\u2019ll need to use the Teams desktop, mobile, or web client to join Teams meetings.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Calls and Chat<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 this is where interoperability gets nuanced and potentially confusing! And you may need to know <a href=\"http:\/\/lisa.rushworth.us\/?p=4860#teamsors4b\">whether the person with whom you want to communicate is using Teams or Skype<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Island Mode <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are currently operating in what Microsoft calls \u201cIsland\u201d mode \u2013 both Teams and Skype are an island, and communication stays on that island. Your presence in Teams comes from your Teams client, and your presence in Skype comes from your Skype client. If you send a message from Teams, it is delivered to the recipient in Teams. delivered within their island, you may get messages in either your Teams or Skype client \u2013 so should leave both running. If you forget to open your Teams client, you will get e-mail notices for missed chat messages (and any channel messages where you are at-mentioned) whenever you are inactive in Teams. You can <a href=\"http:\/\/lisa.rushworth.us\/?p=3451\">customize your notification options<\/a> if you want to get messages more or less frequently, or want to be notified of activity in any channels you follow.<\/p>\n<p>** You will begin receiving e-mail notifications for missed Teams activity <strong><em>after<\/em><\/strong> you log into Teams for the first time. When you\u2019ve switched to Teams Only, you\u2019ll see some differences in your chat and calling communication \u2013 messages sent from Skype will arrive in your Teams client, and your presence in both Teams and Skype will reflect your Teams presence. As a Teams Only user, you\u2019ll be able to seamlessly transition between the mobile and desktop client, find messages from Skype users when searching Teams, and you can often shut down your Skype client. Don\u2019t <em>uninstall<\/em> Skype just yet! You may still use your Skype client to join meetings \u2013 you <em>can <\/em>join Skype meetings through a web client, but you won\u2019t be an authenticated user and may need to wait in the \u201clobby\u201d to be admitted to your meeting. Check their presence. When you send a Teams message to someone who <em>has<\/em> used Teams in the past, they\u2019ll get an e-mail notification alerting them to missed activity. As of 07 March 2019, there is no direct federation between Teams tenants. All federated communication transits Skype.
