In the mid 1990\u2019s, <\/span><\/span>I <\/span><\/span>taught <\/span><\/span>university classes \u2013 everything from introductory physics to string theory and computer forensics. <\/span><\/span>There are some parallels I see between classroom instruction and business meetings. <\/span><\/span>Many classes, and meetings, include some sort of digital presentation \u2013 content projected on the wall or a displayed on a TV. Even if the projector <\/span><\/span>can auto-focus <\/span><\/span>and you are using a <\/span><\/span>projector <\/span><\/span>screen instead of the <\/span><\/span>textured, beige wall \u2026 it can be a struggle for everyone to <\/span><\/span>see<\/span><\/span> the presentation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

To combat this problem<\/span><\/span>, we wrote a program<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>ClassCast<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> that mirrored the instructor\u2019s computer to <\/span><\/span>all of<\/span><\/span> the student computers \u2013 no more squinting to see what was being projected<\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/span> Students could grab screen-prints of important information or download the presentation <\/span><\/span>from <\/span><\/span>the class\u2019s <\/span><\/span>web page<\/span><\/span>. I frequently added links, textbook references, and additional information into the presentation comments too.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Teams provides the functionality we built into <\/span><\/span>ClassCast<\/span><\/span> and<\/span><\/span> adds additional features that benefit in-person meetings. <\/span><\/span>Try it \u2013 start a meeting once everyone assembles in the conference room. Make sure people\u2019s speakers and microphones are muted! <\/span><\/span>S<\/span><\/span>hare your screen in <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>Teams meeting<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Attendees can clearly see what is being projected (you <\/span><\/span>may not <\/span><\/span>even <\/span><\/span>need<\/span><\/span> that projector), notes can be added in OneNote or the meeting chat (a great place to stash questions too). Links and resources can be shared through the meeting chat. If you <\/span><\/span>share a PowerPoint presentation, it is automatically shared out to meeting participants<\/span><\/span>. Even if your presentation <\/span><\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> PowerPoint, <\/span><\/span>you can <\/span><\/span>record your entire presentation \u2013 complete with a transcription<\/span><\/span><\/a> and share the recording in your Teams space<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

ClassCast<\/span><\/span> inadvertently helped with the second problem I experienced<\/span><\/span> as an instructor<\/span><\/span> \u2013 attention. I<\/span><\/span>n the University setting, <\/span><\/span>inattention often<\/span><\/span> meant students suffering through a core requirement who sat playing solitaire<\/span><\/span> or surfing the Internet; but it also meant the student in the back row<\/span><\/span>, students who <\/span><\/span>could barely see the presentation \u2026 well, their attention wandered<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>When e<\/span><\/span>veryone<\/span><\/span> could<\/span><\/span> see the presentation, they were less distracted. <\/span><\/span>Having <\/span><\/span>ClassCast<\/span><\/span> running made it a deliberate act to open a card game or web browser \u2013 instead of staring at a desktop with those inviting <\/span><\/span>(fun) <\/span><\/span>icons, students had to <\/span><\/span>close <\/span><\/span>ClassCast<\/span><\/span>. Yes, there were still a few students playing and ignoring my lesson \u2013 but it became a rare exception rather than the norm.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I don\u2019t see <\/span><\/span>deliberate<\/span><\/span> inattention <\/span><\/span>when hosting business meeting<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>, but attention <\/span><\/span>still <\/span><\/span>wanders. An IM pops in, and that flashing box constantly draws your attention. The new message indicator appears in your system tray and it could be <\/span><\/span>important<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>My director at Alltel had a rule <\/span><\/span>prohibiting computers in meetings, but a<\/span><\/span> text comes across your phone<\/span><\/span> \u2026 and his rule became pointless with the advent of smart phones<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>H<\/span><\/span>aving <\/span><\/span>meeting content <\/span><\/span>on your desktop immerses you in the meeting<\/span><\/span>. If you are speaking to a presentation, that presentation content is <\/span><\/span>right <\/span><\/span>there<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>If<\/span><\/span> the group is meeting to collaborate on a document, instead of having one person performing edits as they are suggested, the document can be edited collaboratively.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
