Anyone who has mis-addressed a message or hit ctrl-enter and\nprematurely sent, well, some<\/em> of a message\nhas probably found the message \u201crecall\u201d option. Unfortunately, \u201crecall\u201d depends\non the recipient having \u201cAutomatically process requests and responses to\nmeeting requests and polls\u201d enabled, cannot recall the message if the recipient\nhas a rule that moves the message out of their inbox, and doesn\u2019t work if the recipient\nisn\u2019t using Exchange. Many times, your attempt to recall a message yields another<\/em> message like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which is better than someone thinking I meant to send them half\nof a thought that stopped mid-sentence. But it\u2019s not what I expected. You can,\nhowever, configure Outlook to delay sending messages \u2026 allowing you a little\ntime to cancel the message. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outlook Client:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the ribbon bar, click \u201cFile\u201d. On the \u2018Account Information\u2019\nscreen, click \u201cManage Rules & Alerts\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click \u201cNew Rule\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In the new rule wizard, select \u201cApply rule on messages I\nsend\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Do not select any conditions \u2013 just click \u201cNext\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

You will see a warning that the rule will be applied to all\nmessages you send \u2013 click \u201cYes\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Click the check-box before \u201cdefer delivery by a number of\nminutes\u201d, then in the text below click the hyperlinked \u2018a number of minutes\u2019\nand enter the number of minutes you want to delay sending messages. Use a small\nnumber \u2013 if you close Outlook before the message is sent, it will not be sent\nuntil you re-open Outlook! (Plus it\u2019s confusing if you\u2019re on a call with\nsomeone, tell them you are sending them something, and it doesn\u2019t actually<\/em> send for fifteen minutes). Click\n\u2018Next\u2019 to continue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give your rule a descriptive name, then click \u201cFinish\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will be warned that the rule will only run if Outlook is\nrunning \u2013 click OK. If<\/em> you routinely\nuse Outlook on two different computers, you\u2019ll need to create this rule on both<\/em> computers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now when you send a message, you will see a counter next to \u201cOutbox\u201d.\nThe message will sit there for the time you specified, then it will be sent. Once\nthe message is sent, the counter will disappear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to stop the message from being sent, click on \u201cOutbox\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right-click on the message \u2013 you can select \u201cMove\u201d and move\nthe message back to your \u201cDrafts\u201d folder or you can delete it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outlook Web:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Click the \u201cSettings\u201d gear in the upper right-hand corner of\nyour screen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click on \u201cMail\u201d to display the mail-related settings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Expand \u201cAutomatic processing\u201d and click on \u201cUndo send\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Click the radio button to select \u201cLet me cancel messages I\u2019ve\nsent for:\u201d then click the drop-down to select how long sending will be delayed.\nPending messages won\u2019t<\/em><\/strong> be sent if you close your browser or put your computer to\nsleep \u2013 they\u2019ll still be there when you open Outlook again. Click save. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now when you send a message, it will be deferred in your \u201cDrafts\u201d\nfolder for the selected time period. While the message is deferred, you will\nsee a \u201cCancel send\u201d option in the upper right-hand corner of your Outlook Web screen.\nIf you don\u2019t want to send the message, just click \u201cCancel send\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The message will be opened to allow you to continue editing\nit. You can save it as a draft or discard it as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
