Using Styles in Word has some advantages \u2013 one-click to\napply a variety of format options, the \u201cNavigation\u201d tool provides quick access\nto \u201cheading\u201d items, the automatic table of contents uses \u201cheading\u201d items too\n(and you can instantly update automatic<\/em>\ntable of contents data as new content is added and page numbers change) \u2013 but\nwhat can you do if the predefined text format doesn\u2019t fit<\/em> your document? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Themes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Under the \u201cDesign\u201d ribbon bar, you will find an array of\nthemes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selecting a different one changes the colors, font faces, font\nweight, and font sizes used throughout the document. You can change your document\nto look like this<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Customize Styles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What if the styles still<\/em>\ndon\u2019t fit your document? I, as an example, prefer my headings bolded and\nsub-headings both bolded and italicized. You can customize a theme to match\nyour specific preferences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the ribbon bar, select \u201cHome\u201d. In the \u201cStyles\u201d section,\nright-click on the style component you want to change and select \u201cModify\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modify the style component as desired \u2013 change the font face,\nmake it bolder, change the size, change the color, add a little more space\nbetween lines, whatever you want. Click the box to \u2018Update Automatically\u2019 and,\nif you want to use this customization in other documents, select the radio\nbutton that says \u2018new documents based on this template\u2019. Click \u201cOK\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sections of your document using that style component will be\nupdated. I have customized all<\/em> of the\nstyle components \u2013 normal, headings, title and subtitles, quotes, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the ribbon bar, select \u201cDesign\u201d. Click the \u201cThemes\u201d\ndrop-down and select \u201csave current theme\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to use your theme on every document you create,\nclick \u201cSet as Default\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
