You\u2019ve used Microsoft Teams to collaborate with individuals assigned to a project, and even created Team spaces for ad hoc groups to work on a problem. But what if you want to discuss the office\u2019s community outreach program or plan the next employee engagement activity? Microsoft Teams is a perfect place to host that collaboration too.<\/p>\n

You can create a public Team space \u2013 a public Team allows anyone to join without requiring approval. This is great if you do not need to verify qualifications before allowing someone to join a Team. From the \u201cTeams\u201d tile, click on \u201cJoin or create a team\u201d at the bottom of your Team list.<\/p>\n

Click \u201cCreate team\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Provide a team name and description so potential members know it\u2019s something that interests them. Now under \u201cPrivacy\u201d, click the down arrow and select \u201cPublic \u2013 Anyone in your organization can join\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Click Next. You can<\/em> start your team by adding some members, or you can click \u201cSkip\u201d and let members add themselves. Voila, you\u2019ve got a public team. (Well, give it a few minutes \u2026 there\u2019s some background magic that needs to complete). When people click \u201cJoin or create a team\u201d, your team will show up in the Team gallery (they may need to search for it \u2013 and as of 25 October 2018 it\u2019s a \u201cbegins with\u201d search \u2026 so Slobbovia will not find my team, but \u201cLower\u201d or \u201cLower Slobbovia\u201d will). As soon as they click \u201cJoin team\u201d, they will be added as a member of your team.<\/p>\n

What if you don\u2019t want your team to be that<\/em> public?<\/strong> Say we only want people who actually work<\/em> in East Slobbovia to join up. Then leave the Privacy setting at \u201cPrivate \u2013 Only team owners can add members\u201d. This means your new Team won\u2019t appear on the \u201cCreate or join a team\u201d Team list \u2026<\/p>\n

From the hamburger menu next to the team name, select \u201cGet link to team\u201d<\/p>\n

The URL will be displayed in a new pane \u2013 click \u201cCopy\u201d and you\u2019ll have the URL in your clipboard.<\/p>\n

Publicize your URL — you could post it to Stream, have the link included in a local newsletter message, e-mail it to potential Team members \u2026 however you let people know about the URL. When someone follows the URL, a membership request will appear on the Team. From the hamburger menu next to the team name, select \u201cManage team\u201d<\/p>\n

Click on the \u201cPending Requests\u201d tab<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll see, well, the pending requests. Click accept to add the person to your team, or click deny if you prefer.<\/p>\n

Changing the settings<\/strong> \u2013 If you change your mind, that\u2019s OK too. In your Teams list, click on the Team itself (not the hamburger menu next to it, and not one of the channels under it. Then click on the hamburger menu next to the team name in the right-hand pane. Select \u201cEdit team\u201d.<\/p>\n

You can change the privacy settings and click \u201cDone\u201d<\/p>\n

Bonus option<\/strong> \u2026 for those of you who have stuck with me this far! You can create a code for your team that allows invited individuals to join the team without<\/em> waiting for your approval. Click the hamburger menu next to the team name and select \u201cManage Team\u201d. On the \u201cSettings\u201d tab, expand the \u201cTeam code\u201d section. Click \u201cGenerate\u201d<\/p>\n

Now there\u2019s a code associated with your team.<\/p>\n

Individuals who have the code can go to the Teams gallery and enter the code in the tile that says \u201cJoin a team with a code\u201d<\/p>\n
