There are 10k four digit codes &#8211; a 1:10000 chance of any specific code unlocking your device. Apple touted a one in a million chance of facial recognition unlocking your phone.<\/p>\n<p>So you trade your privacy for this one in a million super secure lock. Aaaaand a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bkav.com\/d\/top-news\/-\/view_content\/content\/103968\/face-id-beaten-by-mask-not-an-effective-security-measure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vietnamese security firm can hack the phone with a mask<\/a>. Not even a *good* mask (like I take a couple of your pictures, available online, synthesize them into a 3d image and print a\u00a0<em>realistic<\/em>\u00a0mask).<\/p>\n<p>This feat wasn&#8217;t accomplished with millions of dollars of hardware. It took them a week and 150$ (plus equipment, but a 3d printer isn&#8217;t as expensive as you&#8217;d think).<\/p>\n<p><i>Boyd v. United States\u00a0<\/i>or\u00a0<i>Riley v. California\u00a0<\/i>provide fourth amendment protection for phone content &#8230; but that only means the police need a warrant. Fourth amendment, check. Fifth amendment &#8230;\u00a0<i>Commonwealth of Virginia v. Baust\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0\u00a0<em>United States v. Kirschner<\/em>\u00a0says that you while cannot be compelled to reveal a\u00a0passcode to allow police to access your phone (testimonial) &#8230; a\u00a0fingerprint is not testimonial, it is\u00a0documentary. And\u00a0<em>can<\/em>\u00a0be compelled. As with a lot of security, one can ask why I care. If I&#8217;m not doing anything\u00a0<em>wrong<\/em>\u00a0then who cares if the police peruse my phone.\u00a0But if I&#8217;m not\u00a0protesting, why do I care if peaceful assembly is being restricted. I&#8217;m not publishing the Paradise Papers, so why do I care if freedom of the\u00a0press is being restricted?\u00a0Like\u00a0Martin Niem\u00f6ller\u00a0and\u00a0the Nazis &#8211; by the time they get around to harming\u00a0<em>you<\/em>, there&#8217;s no one left to care.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The irony of facial recognition &#8212; the\u00a0idea\u00a0is that you trade some degree of privacy for enhanced security.
